A visual field is that view that can be seen without moving the head. This visual field is split into two, one visual field for each eye. In large part the visual field of each eye overlaps with the visual field of the other. Each eye also has a separate view, the lateral views, which do not overlap and are processed distinctly from one another. The part that overlaps enables binocular (two-eyed) vision, which in turn enables us to perceive depth. Each eye sees its view from a slightly different perspective. The brain, specifically the cortex, takes these slight differnces and processes them allowing us to see three-dimesionally with depth perception.
